Hudson’s Smart Traffic Signals Set to Go Live by Month’s End

New adaptive system promises smoother traffic flow and enhanced emergency response

Hudson’s cutting-edge adaptive traffic signal system is in its final phase and will be fully operational by the end of June, marking a major upgrade to the city’s traffic infrastructure.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The new system represents a significant departure from traditional fixed-timing traffic signals. Instead of operating on predetermined schedules, the adaptive signals use algorithms and real-time data from video sensors to detect actual traffic conditions and adjust timing accordingly.

Contractors are currently completing the project’s final phase by connecting underground fiber between the new signal equipment and the city’s existing fiber network. Once activated, the system will undergo a 10-day performance period for calibration and adjustments.

The adaptive technology will eliminate nighttime flashing signals, with lights operating continuously while adjusting to lower traffic volumes during off-peak hours. Officials say this change will reduce driver confusion and improve nighttime safety.

A key component includes a pre-emption system for emergency vehicles that automatically provides green lights to help first responders reach destinations more quickly and safely.

The modernized system is designed to reduce unnecessary stops, minimize delays and improve overall traffic flow by matching signal timing to actual vehicle volumes rather than preset schedules.
