Defense Seeks DNA Retesting in Aliza Sherman Murder Case

Emergency motion filed after accused killer posts $2 million bond

Updated 8/20/25

During an August 14 pretrial hearing, the defense filed a motion for additional DNA testing of evidence found on Sherman’s watch. The DNA evidence was collected in March 2013 and found on the watch and wristband of the victim. Initial testing indicated the DNA was likely from blood, was from a male, and was not from Moore or Sherman’s estranged husband.

Crime

Moore, 51, of Sagamore Hills, has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated murder, conspiracy, murder, and kidnapping in the death of Aliza Sherman, who was brutally stabbed when she went to Moore’s office on Erieview Plaza in downtown Cleveland for an appointment on March 24, 2013.

Recent Developments

The deadline for pretrial motions was extended during a July 30 hearing. Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion said the full amount of discoveries has not yet been provided to the defense. The state has turned over 60,000 pages of documentation and “several terabytes” of information on external hard drives.

Judge Kira Krivosh ordered Gregory Moore to be placed on GPS monitoring during a July 9 hearing after prosecutors filed an emergency motion requesting the monitoring. Moore cannot have firearms, a passport, and cannot travel outside the state or country. He is also restricted from certain locations to keep the Sherman family’s safety in mind.

Timeline

Moore’s next pretrial is scheduled for August 28. His trial is set for March 30, 2026 at 9:30 a.m.

Bond and Monitoring

Moore posted a $2 million bond on July 3 and was released from the Cuyahoga County Jail. The full bond was paid with funds from a bail bondsman and community members “who believe in his innocence,” according to his attorney.

Family Impact

Sherman’s daughter Jennifer Sherman spoke at the hearing saying, “Our mother cannot stand here today and speak for herself. Not by her own choice. So we stand here for her.”
