Maple Heights, OH – A commendable act of bravery and quick thinking by a Maple Heights resident, Moneka Lewis, has saved a woman’s life, earning her recognition from both her community and local authorities.
The incident occurred on Thursday night as Lewis and her friend were leaving for dinner. While driving out of her driveway, Lewis noticed a car parked suspiciously at the stop sign on Dunham and Longvale. At first glance, she thought the woman inside might be distracted by her phone. However, a second look revealed a more serious situation.
“I thought she was texting. When we got past the stop sign, I saw the woman slumped over her steering wheel. Before we could even get on the main road, I’m telling my girlfriend to stop the car… like she’s not texting, something’s wrong,” Lewis recounted.
Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the woman was unconscious. Lewis immediately sprang into action, ensuring the woman’s safety by turning off the still-running car and putting it in park. She promptly called 911 after detecting the smell of alcohol inside the vehicle, concerned that the woman might pose a danger to herself or others if left unattended.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and provided the necessary assistance to the woman. Maple Heights Mayor Annette Blackwell has since praised Lewis for her decisive actions, which potentially averted a tragedy.
“We are incredibly grateful for Moneka’s quick thinking and willingness to help. Her actions exemplify the spirit of community and compassion we value in Maple Heights,” said Mayor Blackwell. “I encourage everyone to look out for one another and to step in and help whenever they see someone in need.”
This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and the impact one person can have in a critical situation. Thanks to Lewis’s actions, a life was saved, and a potential accident was prevented.
