Summer Fun and Support: Cuyahoga County’s Wealth of Youth Programs

Cleveland, OH — As summer heats up, families across Cuyahoga County can look forward to an abundance of programs designed to keep children and teens engaged, safe, and active. During a recent community event at the Ubuntu Gathering Place in Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne showcased a wide array of initiatives aimed at addressing the seasonal challenges faced by many families.

A Summer of Safety and Engagement

For many families, summer presents a unique set of challenges, including the need for childcare, nutritious meals, and enriching activities. These needs are especially pronounced for at-risk youth who may lack access to safe and supportive environments. Recognizing this, Cuyahoga County has bolstered its efforts to provide a comprehensive range of resources tailored to meet these demands.

“Summer should be a time for kids to stay safe and have fun,” said Ronayne. “We are working hard to ensure that families know about and can access the many programs available to them.”

Resources and Programs for Every Family

The county’s efforts to support families are centered around the Families First initiative, which aggregates contact information for various child welfare organizations, parenting support services, and assistance programs that provide help with housing, utilities, and employment. However, the most accessible way for families to learn about these services is by calling United Way’s 2-1-1 line, a 24/7 helpline that connects callers with appropriate resources and programs.

Here’s a glimpse into some of the exciting summer opportunities highlighted at the event:

  • Out-of-School Time Activities: Starting Point offers a robust search tool to help families find local activities that keep kids engaged during their summer break.
  • Summer Food Programs: The county, in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, provides food programs to ensure that no child goes hungry over the summer.
  • Sports Clinics: Basketball, football, soccer, and cheerleading clinics in Maple Heights offer children a chance to learn new skills and stay active.
  • Cove Community Center: Located in Lakewood, this center provides a variety of recreational services and programs for youth.
  • The Summer Soundtrack: This initiative connects over 8,000 job, recreation, and free lunch opportunities for Cleveland youth, helping them stay productive and engaged.
  • Hoops After Dark: Cleveland’s popular nighttime basketball program offers a safe space for teens to enjoy friendly competition and physical activity.
  • Youth Advocacy and Leadership Council: Aimed at teens aged 13-18, this council provides a platform for young people to develop leadership skills and advocate for their communities.
  • FamilySpace Play Areas: Several locations within the Cuyahoga County Public Library system feature designated play areas where families can spend time together in a safe and educational environment.

A Commitment to Community

Most of these programs are free or low-cost, with some offering scholarships to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent participation. This commitment underscores Cuyahoga County’s dedication to providing inclusive and accessible opportunities for all residents.

For more information on these programs and to explore additional resources, families can visit the Cuyahoga County website.

As the days grow longer and school lets out, Cuyahoga County is making sure that summer is a time for all youth to explore new interests, make friends, and build lasting memories. With such a rich variety of programs and resources available, families can rest assured that their children will have a summer to remember.
