Four professionals recognized for innovation, education, compassion and advocacy in behavioral health services
The County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board will honor four local professionals at the 2025 Trailblazer Awards on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron.
The awards recognize individuals for their commitment to supporting mental health and recovery in Summit County across four categories.
Honorable Joy Malek Oldfield of Summit County Court of Common Pleas will receive the Dr. Bob Smith Innovation Award for creativity and innovation in treating and serving individuals with substance use disorders.
Dr. Eileen M. Schwartz, medical director of psychiatry at Community Support Services, will be honored with the Drs. Fred & Penny Frese Education Award. The award recognizes significant impact in educating others to decrease stigma affecting those with mental health and substance use disorders.
Lauren Munk, prevention coordinator at CHC Addiction Services, will receive the Sister Ignatia Hope Award for demonstrating compassion and kindness while offering hope to inspire change in others.
Chief Jerome T. Klue, director of public safety and chief of police at Akron Children’s Hospital, will be honored with the Maggie Carroll Smith Advocacy Award for exceptional compassion toward people in recovery and serving as an agent of change.
