Ravenna Police Reports: School Shooting Threat, Camping Fire Mishap and Public Intoxication

RAVENNA — Ravenna Police Department handled numerous incidents between Nov. 5 and Nov. 11, resulting in arrests ranging from theft to unruly juvenile charges.

Theft Incidents

Nov. 6: Two individuals were arrested after stealing items from Family Dollar. A male resident placed two cans of Twisted Tea into a female companion’s bag, and both left the store without paying. Officers reviewed surveillance footage and later contacted both individuals, who were advised they would receive summonses for theft.

Nov. 11: A female Ravenna resident was arrested for theft after officers responded to a report at Family Dollar. The woman admitted to taking Icy Hot products without payment and was seen leaving in a dark-colored Kia. Officers conducted a traffic stop and advised the woman she would receive a summons for theft.

School-Related Incidents

Nov. 6: A middle school student was charged with making false alarms after telling multiple classmates he would bring a gun to school and shoot everyone. The juvenile told witnesses not to come to school the next day and threatened to put anyone who reported it in the hospital. Multiple witnesses corroborated the threats, which stemmed from an issue with the student’s confiscated cell phone. After consultation with a prosecutor, the juvenile was charged with making false alarms, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Nov. 6: A runaway juvenile was reported by his mother, who came to the police station to sign charges. Before the subject was entered as a runaway, the mother located him, and officers verified he was home.

Nov. 7: A high school student was charged with disorderly conduct and menacing after an aggressive confrontation with basketball coaches. The junior was informed he did not make the junior varsity basketball team and became angry, calling the head coach profane names. He then approached the JV coach in an aggressive manner, threatening to spit on him and fight him. The school issued a no-trespass letter, and the juvenile was charged with both offenses.

Nov. 10: A middle school student was charged with disorderly conduct for habitually unruly behavior throughout the school year. School officials documented 21 disciplinary write-ups between Sept. 9 and Oct. 30 for defiance, disrespect, and abusive language toward students and staff. The student repeatedly used profanity toward teachers and refused to follow instructions. After all other disciplinary practices failed, school officials requested the juvenile be charged.

Nov. 10: Two eighth-grade students were charged with unruly juvenile offenses after being caught with electronic vaping devices on school property for the second time. One student posted images on Instagram showing himself using a vape in the school bathroom. Both students admitted to regular vaping in the school building. One of the juveniles was already on probation for previous incidents.

Drug-Related Arrests

Nov. 10: A Ravenna man was arrested during a traffic stop after officers discovered he was driving with a suspended license. A small baggie containing a crystal-like substance was found on the driver’s side floorboard. A field test yielded a positive result for methamphetamine. The man was charged with possession of drugs and driving under suspension and transported to Portage County Justice Center.

Nov. 11: A homeless man was arrested after a fire he started while camping behind Townhall II spread to his belongings, a shed, and a fence. The man admitted to making the fire but claimed he had extinguished it before sleeping. During booking, officers found two cut straws with powder that field tested positive for methamphetamine. He was charged with criminal damaging/endangering and possession of drugs.

Intoxication-Related Incidents

Nov. 7: A man was found highly intoxicated in public, repeatedly falling on the sidewalk near McDonald’s. The man was swaying, had slurred speech, and emitted an odor of alcohol. Officers transported him to his residence to prevent him from causing harm to himself. He will receive a summons for disorderly conduct by public intoxication. The charge was enhanced to a fourth-degree misdemeanor due to three prior convictions.

Nov. 10: A Kent resident was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after officers investigated a single-vehicle accident. The driver admitted to drinking three 16-ounce beers approximately three hours before driving and said he had donated blood and not eaten. Officers detected the odor of alcoholic beverages and conducted field sobriety tests. The driver agreed to provide a urine sample for testing.

Trespassing and Property Crimes

Nov. 7: A homeless man was issued a citation for criminal trespass after officers found him inside a location where he had previously been told he was not permitted. The man was also charged with tampering with evidence after throwing a glass object when officers attempted to search him. Officers later recovered pieces of a glass pipe.

Warrant Arrests

Nov. 5: A Kent resident was arrested on an active Ravenna Police Department misdemeanor warrant during a suspicious person call.

Nov. 6: A Ravenna man was arrested on a felony warrant from Portage County Sheriff’s Office. Officers served the warrant without incident.

Nov. 8: Officers served felony warrants on two individuals from Ravenna and Lisbon on behalf of other agencies. Both were transported to Portage County Sheriff’s Office jail without incident.

Nov. 8: A Cleveland resident was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant from Bedford Police Department during a traffic stop and was transported to Streetsboro to exchange custody.

Nov. 8: An Akron resident was arrested on a Ravenna Police Department warrant and transported to Portage County Sheriff’s Office jail.

Nov. 9: A Ravenna man was arrested on a felony warrant from Portage County Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop. He was a passenger in the vehicle, and custody was exchanged without incident.

Nov. 9: A Kent woman was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant from Kent Police Department during a traffic stop. She was transported to a local bowling alley where Kent officers took custody.
