GREEN, Ohio – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office recently recovered $110,000 connected to a cryptocurrency fraud case and is renewing its warning to residents about the dangers of online investment schemes and cryptocurrency fraud.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a City of Green resident reported on October 8, 2025, that they had been the victim of a cryptocurrency investment fraud, suffering a significant financial loss. Detectives with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation using detailed information and financial records provided by the victim.
Working in partnership with the Jackson Township Police Department’s cryptocurrency recovery “Trace Team,” investigators were able to follow the digital money trail and successfully recover $110,000 of the stolen funds.
Authorities say the case is a reminder of how convincing cryptocurrency fraud can appear at first. Many schemes start with small, seemingly legitimate investments that show positive returns and build trust. Once that trust is established, victims are encouraged to invest larger amounts. At that point, law enforcement says, the funds are often transferred and become difficult or impossible for the average person to access.
The Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to thoroughly research any investment opportunity—especially those involving cryptocurrency or unfamiliar online platforms. Officials also recommend extreme caution when dealing with unsolicited offers, messages received through social media, or platforms that pressure investors to act quickly.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of cryptocurrency fraud or an investment scam is encouraged to immediately contact their local law enforcement agency. Victims are also advised to file an online complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says it remains committed to protecting the community and working closely with partner agencies to investigate and combat financial crimes in Summit County and beyond.
