Artificial Intelligence is everywhere these days—on our phones, in our search engines, in our cars, and even in our appliances. And while the term “AI” can sound mysterious or intimidating, like Burt’s fire, the truth is that it’s simply another step in a long line of human-made tools designed to make life easier. Like every major technology throughout history, AI is new, unfamiliar, and surrounded by speculation. But new doesn’t have to mean scary.
If we look back across time, every breakthrough—from electricity to automobiles to computers—began with uncertainty. People wondered whether these inventions were safe, whether they would replace jobs, or whether they would cause more harm than good. And every time, the same pattern emerged: we learned, we adjusted, we put safeguards in place, and the technology became not only safe, but essential.
Fire didn’t stop being dangerous—we just got better at handling it. We learned to contain it, control it, and use it responsibly. The same is happening with AI. The questions people ask today—How does it work? Can it make mistakes? Could it be misused?—aren’t signs of panic; they’re signs of progress. Technology becomes safer precisely because people question it and set boundaries.

Just as we built fireplaces, stoves, and smoke detectors, we’re learning how to design AI systems that provide benefit while minimizing risk.
It’s also important to remember what AI is—and what it isn’t. AI doesn’t have feelings, intentions, or independent desires. It doesn’t “want” anything. It’s a tool, created by people and guided by people. When used properly, it can help analyze medical scans, translate languages instantly, streamline daily tasks, support education, and help small businesses operate more efficiently. Over time, it will likely become as ordinary and unremarkable as many technologies we now take for granted.

So the message is simple: AI is not something to fear.
