AKRON, OH — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been called in to lead an investigation following a multi-agency pursuit and deputy-involved shooting that took place on Saturday evening, February 28, 2026.
The Incident Begins
The situation originated at approximately 6:15 p.m. when the Summit County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist a neighboring jurisdiction in locating a fleeing semi-truck. Earlier in the evening, the suspect had reportedly fled from officers in Springfield Township, where one officer was thrown from the vehicle and suffered a broken leg.
Chase and Collisions
Deputies and local officers located the truck a short time later in a parking lot on East Market Street in Akron. As law enforcement attempted to make contact, the driver again fled, heading westbound on East Market Street. During the attempt to escape, the suspect intentionally struck multiple marked police cruisers.
The pursuit reached a climax near the intersection of East Market Street and Innovation Way. In a final attempt to evade capture, the suspect struck another police cruiser and several occupied civilian vehicles, creating what authorities described as a critical threat to public safety.
Officer-Involved Shooting
In response to the escalating danger, a Summit County Sheriff’s deputy discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect. The driver was immediately apprehended and transported to a local hospital. His injuries are currently believed to be non-life-threatening.
Current Investigation
Per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Ohio BCI responded to the scene and will be the lead agency conducting the investigation. The identity of the driver and the specific charges pending have not yet been released.
No civilians or deputies were reported injured during the final confrontation at Innovation Way, though the Springfield officer remains hospitalized for their previous injuries.
