AKRON — An officer-involved shooting left one person seriously injured following reports of an armed, intoxicated individual threatening residents in a West Akron neighborhood Tuesday night.
Akron Police responded to the 2700 block of Albrecht Avenue around 9:03 p.m. after receiving calls about a fight and an armed individual in a parking lot. Witnesses reported that an intoxicated man was brandishing a firearm and had pointed the weapon at multiple people.
When an officer arrived and encountered the subject, the situation escalated quickly. The officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual. Officers immediately provided medical aid before paramedics transported the person to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The officer involved has approximately four years of police service, including the past year with the Akron Police Department. Department policy requires the officer be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigations has taken over the case and will conduct the investigation. Upon completion, the findings will be forwarded to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being presented to the Summit County Grand Jury.
The Akron Police Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct a separate internal review, with results provided to the Police Chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available.
