Residents near a major Brecksville intersection were asked to stay inside for several hours Sunday after a domestic disturbance escalated into a police standoff involving a barricaded man who claimed to have weapons, according to officials.

Police were called to a home in the area of Hilton Road and Mill Road around 4:40 p.m. after a woman reported a domestic disturbance involving a male family member. When officers arrived, the woman was able to leave the home, but the man reportedly barricaded himself in a bedroom and threatened that he had knives and a gun, police said.

As the situation developed, an emergency alert was issued to residents in the vicinity. The alert read: “BRECKSVILLE RESIDENTS IN THE AREA OF HILTON RD AND MILL RD PLEASE SHELTER IN PLACE DUE TO A POLICE SITUATION.”

Parts of Hilton Road at Brecksville Road and at Mill Road were closed for several hours as the situation unfolded. A SWAT team responded to assist Brecksville officers, and negotiators remained in contact with the man into the evening. According to officials, negotiations continued until around 9 p.m., when police took the man into custody and transported him to a hospital for evaluation.

The woman involved in the initial call was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries, authorities said. No injuries to officers were reported, and early information did not indicate that shots were fired. Police had not publicly released the man’s name or specific charges as of Monday morning.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted after the arrest, and roads in the area were reopened.

The incident highlights how quickly domestic disturbances can escalate into broader public safety events that affect entire neighborhoods, particularly when weapons are reportedly involved. Officials used phone alerts and road closures to keep residents away from the active scene while working to resolve the standoff peacefully.

Residents in Northeast Ohio who receive a shelter-in-place alert are generally advised to stay indoors, avoid the affected area, monitor official communications and refrain from calling 911 unless they have an emergency or direct information about the active incident.
