Child Endangerment
A local woman reported to Solon Police Station on Sept. 26 that her husband had left their 2-year-old son home alone the previous afternoon for approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The woman told officers the incident was captured on a home surveillance camera. She explained the couple is going through a divorce and expressed concern about her children’s safety if left in her husband’s custody without her present.
Officers issued a warrant and located the man at his home on Oct. 1 when no children were present. The 48-year-old Solon man was taken to Solon Jail and charged with endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor. Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services will follow up on the case.
Traffic Stop Leads to Stolen Gun Recovery
An officer conducting a traffic stop for expired plates near Pet Supplies Plus on Aurora Road on Sept. 27 discovered a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat during a search prompted by the smell of burnt marijuana.
The firearm had been reported stolen in Lawrence, Indiana. Officers also found suspected marijuana in the vehicle and learned the passenger had an outstanding warrant with the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office.
The 23-year-old Maple Heights driver was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony, carrying concealed weapons, a first-degree misdemeanor, and adult use of cannabis in a vehicle, a minor misdemeanor. The 27-year-old Cleveland passenger was arrested on the warrant. The vehicle was towed.
Day Care Investigation
A passing motorist contacted police on Sept. 28 after finding a 4-year-old boy walking alone down Station Street toward SOM Center Road.
Officers responded to Higher Achievement Center and found four other small children being watched by a single 17-year-old employee. The employee reported the boy must have left the facility undetected after being dropped off by his mother.
The store owner was contacted about providing additional staff. Officers reported the incident to Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services and the State of Ohio Department of Children and Youth. The city prosecutor reviewed the case and ruled no criminal charges were warranted. The child’s mother is not suspected of wrongdoing.
Warrant Arrest Reveals Concealed Drugs
An officer stopped a speeding Ford Edge traveling 83 mph in a 60 mph zone on U.S. 422 near SOM Center Road on Sept. 29. The driver had an outstanding warrant from Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and a suspended license.
After arriving at Solon Jail, the woman surrendered suspected ecstasy pills that were concealed in her clothing. The 36-year-old Cleveland woman was charged with possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, driving under suspension and speeding, both minor misdemeanors. She is being held on the warrant. The vehicle was towed.
Mail Fraud Investigation
An 82-year-old Solon woman reported on Oct. 2 that a check she mailed from the outdoor mailbox at the Station Street post office in early September had been intercepted and altered.
The woman wrote the check for a credit card payment in the amount of $145.77. On Oct. 1, she discovered an unauthorized withdrawal of $9,800 from her checking account. Officers are investigating. The bank requires a police report to reverse the charges if possible.
Motorcycle Flees Traffic Stop
Officers are investigating after a pink motorcycle without a visible license plate fled a traffic stop on Oct. 5.
An officer first observed the motorcycle in traffic without a license plate, then spotted it at the True North gas station parking lot on SOM Center Road with a plate visible. When the officer saw the bike again on SOM Center Road heading to U.S. 422 west without a plate displayed, she attempted a traffic stop. The motorcycle, carrying a male driver and female passenger, failed to pull over. The officer did not pursue. Investigation continues to identify the driver.
